VCD Visiting Scholars

The Visual Communication Design program welcomes a variety of national and international visiting scholars. They enrich the cultural fabric of the program and expose our students to new perspectives and worldly ideas.

Jiang Li

Dr. Jiang Li is an associate professor at Beijing Normal University in China. He graduated from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Dr. Li has a wide range of research interests, focusing on visual art design, design ecology research, and modern design development. He has published dozens of academic papers and 10 monographs and teaching materials. He has worked as an editor in many art and design magazines and actively participated in international academic seminars. He has participated in academic exchanges and delivered speeches in Seoul, New York, and other places.

VisitingSchollar_Huang Zhang

Huang Zhang is a Ph.D. candidate at Wuhan University of Technology. Her research investigates the visual design of American contemporary art environments. She received a master's degree from Wuhan University of Technology with a focus on app design and user interface. She has experience with brand design, packaging design, interface design, poster design, and creative product design. Her design works have won international awards including the East + West International Poster Biennale and the Daiqiang Jin Global Chinese Design Competition.

VisitingSchollar_ZhizhengZhang

Zhizheng Zhang is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Design art & Media at Nanjing University of Science and Technology. His design and Scholarly works focus on user interface research and experience design. He works closely with users of different cultural backgrounds through various research projects.

Jing Yang is an Associate Professor in the College of Design at South China University of Technology. Her design and scholarly works are based on Chinese traditional culture, with a focus on branding and packaging design. She maintains close collaborations with businesses through various research programs to further her research and teaching.

Hongyu Dong is an Associate Professor in the School of Art & Design at Beijing Institute of Technology. Her scholarly research and graphic design work focus on book design and illustration. Previously a visiting scholar at KOBE Design University in Japan, Prof. Dong has also participated in several cross-disciplinary projects. Her works have been shown in both national (China) and international exhibitions.

HyungJoo Kim

Continuing Lecturer of Visual Communications Design

HyungJoo Kim is a graphic designer and educator. HyungJoo's designs have been recognized in over one hundred exhibitions/ publications nationally and internationally. Professionally, HyungJoo has worked in several positions in the graphic design field including designer, illustrator, art director, and design director. These positions involved completing diverse design projects and handling communications with a variety of client groups. She has developed identity programs for the clients emphasizing branding, logotypes, packaging, and various applications. Also, she designed and directed several international events including Asia Photography Conference and the Environmental Poster Exhibition of International Solar Cities Congress. [read more]

Dennis Y. Ichiyama

Professor of Visual Communications Design

Dennis Y Ichiyama is a designer, professor, and former administrator at Purdue University. His designs are in the collections of the Lahti Museum of Poster Art (Finland) and the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Zurich. They have also been published and exhibited in the US, Canada, Czechoslovakia (the Czech Republic), France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Poland. He has been awarded five Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) Individual Artist Fellowships for design arts, and was the first Artist-in-residence at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Wisconsin in the spring of 2000. Martin Sickafoose

Visiting Lecturer of Visual Communications Design

Martin Sickafoose, a 1990 graduate of Purdue’s VCD program, has over 25 years of creative and digital experience, the last ten of which have been spent at Purdue University. He is the Director of Digital Marketing and oversees the web, social, and mobile presence of the university. While at Purdue, his digital team has re-launched an audience-focused and responsive website (twice), built a mobile app that is utilized by over 500,000 each month, and established an institution-wide social media policy. Working with Purdue’s Strategic Communications team, digital marketing has assisted in building a campus-wide social media crisis communication plan. He sits on Board of Directors for the HighEdWeb Association, the planning committee for the university’s web content management system, and serves as a mentor to several student groups on campus.
